Last week, Marc Maron interviewed Don Was on his podcast “WTF”. I only knew Don from Was (Not Was)‘s hit single Walk the Dinosaur, which I didn’t pay much attention to when it was fresh.Turns out, he’s an old-school Detroit guy who’s has worked with everyone from Horace Silver to the B52′s to The Stones. He’s pals with the MC5 and Iggy Pop. He’s a top-tier producer and it also turns out he’s a pretty wicked bass player.
Now I have a bunch of “brand new” 80’s music that I’ve never heard before. I’m now making my way through the entire Was (Not Was) catalogue. I guess you’d call it Detroit jazz/new wave/pop/rock/funk. Super fun music.
All along, all I’ve really wanted to be is a writer. So now I tell people that’s what I am, even though I haven’t earned a dime being a writer.
That being said, I’ll confess that once a day, every day, I wish I was still a musician. That was the one time in my life when I was cool.
