The first video below is of astronaut Kjell Lindgren playing Amazing Grace on the International Space Station. Take that Chris Hadfield.
Here’s a cool article about extreme bagpiping situations. I like the picture of Gilbert Kerr playing for an Emperor Penguin in Antarctica, but the story of Bill Millin playing on the beach at Normandy really resonates with me. Pipes always make me want to fight. A relative of mine owns a WW1 era regimental kilt with both an entry and exit bullet hole about a foot from the bottom hem…the soldier (our mutual great-grandfather) almost got his balls shot off. You’ve got to be tough.
Last but not least, no post about bagpiping would be complete without a nod to the Red Hot Chiili Pipers (second video below).
All along, all I’ve really wanted to be is a writer. So now I tell people that’s what I am, even though I haven’t earned a dime being a writer.
That being said, I’ll confess that once a day, every day, I wish I was still a musician. That was the one time in my life when I was cool.
