Dan Mangan is an indie singer/songwriter from Vancouver whose music has moved gradually from acoustic-guitar-strumming dude to increasingly experimental and alternative sounds over the past few years. Along the way, he has won a couple of Song of the Year awards from CBC Radio 3, which has become the tribal home for Canada’s best and brightest rising indie artists. He also likes to hang/work with other cool West Coast indie artists such as Said the Whale and Elliott Brood, and various characters from Vancouver’s free-jazz community. These collaborations gradually coalesced into Blacksmith, Mangan’s backing band; the collection of sounds has grown quite intriguing.
Here, Mangan channels Peter Gabriel, in a track from his 2015 album, Club Meds. The video, fittingly, also evokes mid-1980s Peter Gabriel – if PG was a liberal-leaning Canadian lumberjack.
