I just can’t stop listening to Courtney Barnett. What has me addicted is the quality of the lyrics – not too often you find a lyricist this clever/intelligent/funny. I mean, who else would write a song about an anaphylactic attack?
The paramedic thinks I’m clever ‘cause I play guitar
I think she’s clever ‘cause she stops people dying
Take the time to absorb the lyrics. When I did, I went from “I like this” to “I LOVE this.” She’s a poet of the mundane, and there’s something very inventive in the rhythm of her verse and her offbeat (literally and figuratively) rhymes.
The music’s pretty catchy, too.
In particular, try “Elevator Operator” and “An Illustration of Loneliness (Sleepless in New York)”.
A friend of mine said she sound reminds him of “Sheryl Crow, only GOOD.”
My thought was “Joni Mitchell, if she had a sense of humour.”
