This is Newfoundland singer-songwriter Amelia Curran, who was the opening act for the Rheostsatics’ April 29 reunion concert in Toronto (Massey Hall). When the show started, I admit I’d never heard of her – and I would estimate that three-quarters of the Rheos fans who filled the building were in the same boat. By the end of her 45-minute set, she had her second standing ovation and a building full of new fans.
If your taste in music trends toward people like Tracy Chapman, A Fine Frenzy, Brett Dennen, Brandi Carlyle, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan, I predict you will like Amelia very, very much.
She is so freaking good lyrically, instrumentally, and vocally that I’m having a hard time figuring out why she isn’t more well known. She has a new fan in me.
