I’m totally addicted to this album right now. A couple of cool originals mixed in with some fantastic covers. I particularly like “School’s Out / Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2”, “Whole Lotta Love”, and “My Dead Drunk Friends”.
The original Hollywood Vampires was a drinking club of rock stars in the 70’s. The test to get into the club was to outdrink all the other members….and good luck with that. These guys were pros. Club President Alice Cooper listed members as Bernie Taupin, Harry Nilsson, Micky Dolenz, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Emerson and Keith Moon.
The “new” Hollywood Vampires is a supergroup formed earlier this year by Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry (Aerosmith). The album has guest appearances by Christopher Lee, Paul McCartney, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Slash, Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction), and Zak Starkey (drummer for The Who and also Ringo’s son) among others.
Debut live gigs were held at Roxy Theatre in LA on September 16/17, and were a star-studded affair. The live band includes the three core members along with Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum (Guns ‘n Roses, Velvet Revolver), and rhythm guitarist Tommy Henriksen (Alice Cooper Band). Guests were Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Perry Farrell, Marilyn Manson, and Kesha (huh?).
So yeah…”supergroup” seems like a bit of an understatement. Don’t forget Depp was a musician until he fell into acting by accident. So it’s not like he’s some piker. That being said, he doesn’t look 100% at ease sharing the stage with his legendary friends/bandmates. Can’t say I blame him. I’d be crapping my drawers if my third gig was at Rock in Rio with Alice and Joe. Even to a star of his ilk, that must be a surreal experience. Overall, I’d say he nails it. He’s a good player, a good writer, and he looks the part. Kudos, Mr. Depp.
